Race Report – Pantanal World Champs

Thursday, November 26th, 2015

GODZone Adventure Team – 2015 World Championships Race Report: The 2015 World Championships location was announced late in 2014 and we had been expecting a hard race ever since. It turned out to be the most brutal race we have ever done which is a view I think most the athletes would agree with. However, alongside the pain, we got to experience a truly magical place. Racing in Brazil’s Pantanal (the world’s largest tropical wetland area) was like racing in a zoo or safari park. I have never been surrounded by so many incredible animals and birds. We got really up close and personal with alligators and by the end of the week we were walking and swimming just a few feet away from […]

Primal Quest 2015 – Race Report

Thursday, September 3rd, 2015

Statistics, consumer trends and plain old common sense suggest that the human attention span is getting shorter and shorter (oi, focus). At the current rate of mental decline, the common goldfish will soon overtake Homo sapiens on the ability to concentrate scale. Humans will be defined by their predisposition to visit the same social media hub every 4 to 5 seconds, overwhelmed by a nagging sense of deja vu. Meanwhile, the goldfish emboldened and freed from the stigma of it’s cognitive capabilities, will be left to contemplate one of sport’s great mysteries – why have expedition length adventure races, in the main, bucking the trends that so characterise our modern world? Go […]

Victory at Beast of Ballyhoura, Ireland

Friday, July 3rd, 2015

The Beast of Ballyhoura race was back in residence at the University of Limerick last night for the prize giving ceremony, which was held at the Sports Pavilion restaurant. Teams had the afternoon to rest up and sort out gear after the short coach ride back from the finish line in Kilfinanne and most then rode their bikes across to the Pavilion as it’s the other side of the huge campus. It was an ideal venue for such a big race and the tables soon filled up while the burger and salad meal went down well after all the race and hill food of the past few days. Teams were anxious to here the results of course, and when RD Ivan Park arrived he gave each team the print out of their […]

Sting in Stirling Adventure Race

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

Adidas TERREX Sting in Stirling 18th – 25th August 2012 Team Adidas TERREX Race Report By: Chris Hope Team Adidas Terrex – ready for action ! I have fancied competing in a nonstop adventure race for a while now, and after completing the Coast to Coast race last year and seeing the promotional video for the Sting, I was keen for 2012 to be the year.  The hardest part is getting a team together or joining the right team, so when Paul Noble suggested me to Tom Gibbs when they were a man down, I couldn’t have hoped for a better opportunity.  A chance to race with and learn from Tom, Bruce Duncan and Nicola Macleod, who have all got a raft of big races and results to their […]

World Adventure Racing Champs – 2011 – Tasmania

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

From the UK it’s hard to go much further away than Tasmania, and after 2 days of travelling it certainly felt like the end of the earth, that was until enroute to Race HQ in Burnie, we drove through the town of Ulverstone on the River Leven.  Both names being the same as my local town and river back home ! After a few days sorting kit, getting registered, packing kit and marking maps we were on the start line on the sea front in Burnie and ready for the off. The race started with a sea paddle along the Bass Strait to the fantastically named town of Penguin.  Each team had one rigid sit on top kayak and an inflatable kayak.  With the crosswinds the inflatables were struggling […]

Another Win in Patagonia – Thats 4 in a row now.

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Magellan Strait, Tierra del Fuego, Darwin Range, Beagle Channel. Place names from the stories of early explorers, at the end of the world. But this is where we were heading for the 10th Patagonian Expedition Race. We were back in Punta Arenas, Chile. In the team was Nick Gracie from the UK, Albert Roca from Catalonia (Spain) and Stu Lynch and Sarah Fairmaid from New Zealand. Team adidas TERREX - Prunesco had won the race for the previous 3 editions and we were there to try and make it 4 in a row. The race start was at a very uncivilised 2:30am in the morning with a bike ride from Punta going south along the coast of the Magellan Strait. The early start was so that we would get on […]

Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2011

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

This year was the 3rd time I had been to Patagonia for the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race (WPER), having won on both previous occasions, there was a bit of pressure to bring home the hat-trick.  We had a strong team though, Mark Humphrey and myself coming back, Nick Gracie was out for his first taste of the Patagonian wilderness, and relative new comer, but super strong athlete Fi Spotswood making up the Team adidasTERREX/Prunesco line up.  Yes once again, Prunesco had agreed to support us, it is a great partnership, and we do seem to do rather well when running under their name! After the usual kit and gear checks, we bought the shops out of race food, mountains of chocolate, […]

Wenger Patagonian Expediton Race 2011

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

I can't believe that a year has flown by, and I am once again packing my bags to head off to Southern Chile, to compete for the 3rd year in the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race (WPER). It is always a daunting time just before a race, so many questions running through your head, am I fit enough? have I got all the right kit? what did we say we should bring with us from last year? who else is racing? how will it go?  And when I am out training I find myself worrying a lot about falling off my bike or twisting an ankle and injuring myself, silly thoughts, but they all come racing through your head and you just have to ignore them and carry on with your plan. All I want to […]

Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race 2011

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

With the start of the New Year team adidas TERREX are already preparing and planning for the first expedition race of the year.... It only feels like yesterday that the winning team of the 2009 and 2010 WPER were discussing the feasibility of heading back to Chile to have another crack at this amazing wilderness race.  Now with less than four weeks to the start behind the scenes the team members Mark and Bruce are joined by fellow team members Nick Gracie and Fi Spotswood and sponsor Prunesco to race under team name adidas TERREX / Prunesco for the 2011 edition of the race. The journey to Punta Arenas will entail three different flight connections and over 15 hours of flying. When […]
